Job DescriptionThe peer specialist provides peer support services as a parent, consumer or young adult with lived experience in navigating mental health /substance abuse services. Serves as an advocate, shares coping skills, and provides recovery and resiliency related information for peers. The peer specialist performs a wide range of tasks to assist and support people in directing their own lives and their personal recovery process. For children and youth, this means helping them to successfully live in their family, achieve in school, and participate in their communities. For adults, this means supporting people to live self-directed lives in self-determined roles are socially included in communities of their choices. The peer specialist will role model competency in resiliency and recovery and ongoing coping skills.
Essential Functionsbr>Will serve as member of CMC’s high risk care management team and will:
Assist his or her peers to identify recovery goals
Provide information and support to assist peers to effectively participate in developing a plan of care, engage in team-based planning and facilitate co-creating of Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP) as needed based on recipient choice.
Model and collaborate to develop problem solving techniques with individuals
Collaborate to assist peers how to:
Identify their strengths and needs;
Identify and combat negative self-talk
Identify and overcome fears
Employ coping strategies and relapse prevention skills
Share resiliency and recovery-oriented educational materials
Employ strategies to engage parents of children and adult peers who do not keep important follow-up appointments to identify barriers & obstacles and collaborate to find solutions
Assist peers on inpatient units to prepare a comprehensive plan for discharge that includes relapse prevention strategies
Link peers to community-based peer, parent, and family support services
Liaison with parent-run and consumer organizations and provider agencies regarding efforts to expand the use of peer specialists, achieve family/consumer-driven and youth-guided care, and support recovery-oriented programs. Serve as liaison with advocacy organizations regarding peer support training and implementation initiatives.
Serve as champion for resiliency and recovery principles within the Care Management Center. Be a resource to CMC staff on recovery strategies and tools. Regularly attend and participate in CMC Consumer/Provider council meetings.

Knowledge of local system of services, resiliency and recovery principles and tools, such as wellness recovery action plans, wraparound process, and community-based peer, family, and parent support organizations and services
Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbal
Ability to represent strengths and needs of consumers in clinical settings
Ability to summarize and document findings in treatment plans
Licenses, Certifications, etc.: Certificate of peer support training from a parent or consumer advocacy organization as available. Preference is for someone who has completed certification but will also consider candidates in the process of obtaining the Certification of Peer Support by the State of New Mexico.
Education: Bachelor degree preferred.
Experience: As a mental health or substance abuse advocate preferred. Applicants must be able to draw on their own personal experience:
Either parenting a child or youth with significant behavioral health challenges, or as a consumer or young adult who has experienced those challenges;
Negotiating services and supports; and
Be able to transcend their personal events to articulate the collective experience of their peers in the surrounding geographic area.
Positive attitude that communicates hope and a recovery orientation
Ability to hear anecdotal information and reframe in the context of facts and data, without losing empathy
Strong interpersonal and listening skills
Able to make presentations in team meetings and facilitate discussions
Have a solid understanding of the recovery process and how to use their own experience to help others
Have an understanding of wellness strategies, coping skills, and collaborative process
Sitting, Standing, Typing, Alternative work hours (Between 5:00p.m– 8:00a.m.)
The position requires travel to the northwest quadrant of New Mexico. Qualified candidates must have reliable transportation.
